Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
  • measurable/observable
  • should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
  • should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
  • linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.

In the space below describe you goal and plan in two paragraphs.

In the first paragraph, describe a rationale your professional development goal. This rationale should describe the goal, the personal need that it will address, and how this goal benefits your students and your perspective school.

I. Professional Development Goal

Goal: To become an efficient effective classroom manager.

I plan to set clear rules and expectation with my students in the classroom. I will stand-by these standards being fair and consistent with my students. I want an extremely productive classroom where students know the main objective when they walk into my room is to learn. In this environment students will feel safe. A classroom that is managed well allows children to take risks in their learning. Students can do this when they feel respected by their teacher and fellow classmates. Students will be able to do meaningful independent and group projects in an effectively managed classroom. In addition to the classroom being behaviorally managed, classroom timing is very important. This can be very difficult for a new teacher. If teachers clearly communicate their agenda to the students timing can be managed effectively.

Students in my classroom will benefit from effective classroom management in numerous ways. Students will feel safe in my classroom that is well managed to share their ideas. More learning for the students will take place in this type of environment. With less interruptions and clear standards students will be more productive and I will be able to make the most of the time I have with my students in my classroom. This effective classroom management will not only benefit the learning experience of the students and the productivity of the teacher, but it will also be a benefit for the school as a whole. The school will have the benefit of a seasoned teacher that can share her classroom management skills with other professionals to reduce the amount of discipline problems.

This goal aligned with RIBTS 6 can be measured through administrative and peer observation.

Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.

II. Professional Development Plan

For my professional development I plan to observe other teachers that are known to be great classroom managers. I will keep a journal where I will try new skills and reflect on how they work with different students. I will post the classroom rules in my room that students have signed a contract and know the protocol of consequences that will follow when they violate those rules. I will also ask other teachers to observe me in my room to critique my management skills and give me friendly feedback.

I will also attend at least 3 outside professional developments to help me manage many different types of students. I will learn more about ADHD and oppositional defiance students. I will also attend professional development about student engagement because engaged students have less behavior problems. I will also read at least one journal article a month pertaining to classroom management and student engagement so I can further develop and practice my classroom management skills.
